XDA member hotaru has ported the Gingerbread keyboard for all phones. It’s not necessary to be root. Here the instructions:
1. Download it for Froyo or Eclair.
2. Install the APK.
3. Enable it on Settings > Language & keyboard > Gingerbread Keyboard.
4. In any text field, press and hold until it is put up the screen “Input method”. Select the new keyboard.
